MUSIC

Someone once called my genre of music “rap that I can play in front of my mom.” I think that’s a compliment? I’ve loved hip-hop music ever since I can remember, growing up on a unique blend of Nas, Kanye, and Blu. In 2009, I started to try my own hand at it, but much of the early music has been erased from the internet. The albums I’ve released since 2014 are listed below.

If you enjoy what you hear, please share it with a friend! Every listen is more motivation for me to keep creating.

WHEN THE DAYS GROW LONGER (APR. 2021)

This album was created to reflect the overall vibes of spring time in Fargo. After our longest winter to date (going on month 13 of the pandemic)), Jared and I wrote and recorded this 6-song project in an effort to boost our own spirits – and hopefully yours, too. We took turns leading song ideas and collaborating on this project that uses production from Kiyoto and Pieper. We hope you enjoy!

DRUMBEAT MUSIC VIDEO (Mar. 2021)

The music video for “Drumbeat,” a song off Twenty Somethings EP was developed and filmed in the winter of 2021. It was released publicly on March 12th, 2021. This narrative by Guero (a Fargo-based filmographer and director) helped capture a story to go alongside Drumbeat’s theme: trying to regain one’s self of control. This song by Huck. and myself was the third track off the most recent EP, and lent itself to a beautiful video that our friends were able to produce. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Grips: Burleigh Holder, Joe Medina, Nick Biewer. Sound: Samuel Lacasse. Choreography: David Triptow. Art: Leah Ecklund. Special Thanks: Oscar De Leon, Sr. Song Engineering: Huck. Beat by TheKidGoran. Songwriting & Performance by Jacksun. and Huck.

TWENTY SOMETHINGS (DEC. 2020)

Growing up, I always looked at people senior to me as having it ‘figured out.’ In middle school, I thought high schoolers had it figured out. In high school, college kids must. In college, graduates would. It became a constant moving target, and I kept waiting for some of the clarity I expected to have at certain milestones. At 27, I’ve come to accept that ‘figuring it out’ isn’t as much about having total confidence in what to do in life, but rather it’s about having built-up resilience from things not going how you’d expect, and finding comfort in the things that are out of your control. Twenty Somethings is me figuring it out.

AIOLI – SINGLE (NOV. 2020)

I had the plan to learn how to make sauces during quarantine, but life took some twists and turns and I never got to make my new chipotle aioli. It’ll happen soon. Instead, I decided to make a song called “Aioli” so I could still feel like I sort of crossed it off my list. This is the last single before my new album. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Deja Vu- Single (Sep. 2020)

When leasing the beat for “Waverunner,” we had the option of getting a second lease for free, and chose to do so on the instrumentation for this song. Jared (Huck.) and I each wrote and recorded our verses in July 2020, and finished up the recording of this in August 2020. The title from the song came from my opening line (“coming through with singles like it’s Deja Vu”), which is a tip of the hat to the night club in Minneapolis. However, we also were referencing how we haven’t released singles together since 2016. The process of building this song brought back a lot of deja vu/memories from our early days creating music together. We hope you enjoy it, too.

Sun Also Sets (AUG. 2020)

I wrote this collection of five songs over the months of March – June 2020, while quarantined in my Moorhead apartment. The album title is a play off “Sun Also Rises,” a novel by Ernest Hemingway. In the book, Jake and his friends navigate a postwar environment, struggling to derive a purpose for their lives. I was inspired to write a succinct project that would encapsulate a summer day from my late teen years – from sunrise to sunset – and pull bits of meaning out of some of my lived experiences during that time period. The album starts out very uptempo and moves to a more self-reflective mood in the latter half of the five songs. Click below to stream.

FARGONE EP (Apr. 2020)

In December 2019, I left my job with no backup plan. I spent the months of January and February getting back to some of my old passions – including writing and recording music. “Fargone EP” was created during this time. It was written in my apartment in Moorhead, MN, and recorded and engineered by my good friend (and fellow artist) Jared Huckell (aka Huck). The songs symbolize transitional movement, while also paying homage to the community from which the music was inspired. You can stream it above, or click-through to any of the links below.

SAWYER MOON EP (Apr. 2016)

available on SoundCloud only (not for profit)

In the early months of 2016, Jared and I started to write some music together for a collaborative EP that we ended up calling “Sawyer Moon” (a slight play off HuckFin/Tom Sawyer and JackSun/JackMoon). These songs were intended to do nothing more than break us both out of the sour moods that come with winters in Fargo-Moorhead. We took turns picking out beats and writing verses, and completed this five song project that went on SoundCloud. At this point in time, the project has over 90k streams.

LEAVES LP (NOV. 2015)

available on SoundCloud only (not for profit)

After graduating from college in May 2015, I started to write and record this collection of songs over the summer and fall, and released this project in November 2015. At the time, I aptly summarized this project as “the album I could have used when I was a kid.” Going through a big life transition (exiting college and entering adulthood), and feeling the change in the leaves, the songs from this project were my attempt at making some sense of the world as it evolved around me.

JACKSUN EP (Mar. 2015)

available on SoundCloud only (not for profit)

This collection of songs was written over the winter months of my senior year of college, and released in the spring of that year. This was actually the introductory album to my new penname, “Jacksun.,” as everything before this project was released by “J-Yak.” With a lot happening in my nuclear world (family and friends), and inspired to create a new sound that I could be known by, this project likely represents the biggest shift in my approach to music-making – putting more energy on the structure of a song, including a greater amount of emphasis being placed on the choruses. When I released it on SoundCloud, one of the songs that really broke out was “Tryna With You” which has now passed 70k streams.

VALLEYS LP (Aug. 2014)

available on SoundCloud only (not for profit)

To this point in time, this is my favorite project I’ve ever done. I wrote it over the duration of the second semester of my junior year of college, and originally released it to my old J-Yak Bandcamp site in August 2014. I re-released it to my Jacksun. page (even though it technically was a J-Yak release) in 2015. Here’s what I wrote about it at the time: “A story centered around our protagonist, Jack, who is coming to terms with the fragility of life and the ever changing people and places that surround him. “Valleys” touches upon the highs, lows, and in-betweens of leaving home, finding love, discovering truth, etc.”
